What is a Computer Desktop?
Introduction
The desktop is the default display that gets displayed once the startup process is complete during booting the system. It represents different types of objects, including project folders, reference sources, drawing tools, documents, writing tools, phone books, telephones. It is the primary user interface of a computer that might be found on top of a physical desk. The icons of files and folders that you store to the desktop are displayed on the desktop, as well as the desktop wallpaper.
Parts of the Desktop
Icons: Small pictures displayed on the desktop background are called Icons. Different desktops represent files, folders, programs, gadgets, etc. Some common icons that you will almost always on the desktop are as follows:
- The Computer icon is a system icon. It represents the computer program that pro access to the different storage drives installed on the computer and the files, fote programs, etc. that they contain.
- The Recycle Bin is a system icon. It represents the recycle bin program that is meant to store the files/folders that we delete from the computer, accidentally or intentionally. To delete a file/folder permanently from the computer we should delete it from the Recycle bin.
- The Network icon is a system icon that represents the utility for browsing network resources like shared files, folders on other computers, networked local printers, Web links (URLs), etc. You can add or search for other computers that are a part of the network.
- The My Documents icon represents a system folder. It is the default Window folder for storing any kind of documents that you create and save on the computer. AM
Taskbar
The taskbar is the narrow bar at the bottom of the desktop. It contains the Start button and the System Tray or Notification Area. In the middle, the icons of some pinned programs and running programs are displayed. You can simply click on a taskbar icon to open the associated program.
Background
The empty area of the desktop screen on which icons are placed is called the desktop background. We can place a picture or graphic as the desktop background to make it look beautiful and colorful. The desktop background is also known as the wallpaper.
Gadgets
Gadgets are applets that put information right on your desktop. These are customizable mini-programs that display information such as continuously updated news headlines, calendar, clock, CPU usage, stock updates, or a picture slide show, without having to open a new window.
Using the Mouse to Work in Windows
The mouse is a pointing device that supports the "point-and-click" functionality. It helps to point to a particular graphical element or a command option in a menu and select or run it by clicking on it.
Using the Mouse Buttons
There are different types of mouse; they have two, three, and sometimes even four buttons. However, their basic functions are the same. The most commonly used mouse is the one that has two buttons and a scroll wheel. Let us learn the functions of each of the buttons.
Left Button
The left button is also known as the primary mouse button is one you will most often click while working with Windows. We use it to perform the following basic operations:
1. Click: Click, single click, or left click means to bring the mouse pointer over an icon and press the left mouse button once. This action is used to select icons and commands displayed in the menus.
2. Double click: Pressing and releasing the left mouse button twice quickly is called a double click. We can double-click a file or program icon to open it in a window.
3. Dragging: Dragging means moving the mouse across a horizontal surface while keeping the left mouse button pressed. This action is used to move an icon or some graphical object from one place to another on the computer screen. We also use the dragging action to draw on the computer.
Right Button
The right button of the mouse is also known as the secondary mouse button. We use it primarily to right-click an object (or any part of the screen) to obtain a context menu (or shortcut menu). The context menu of an object contains the commands to work with it or manipulate its properties.
Scroll Wheel
The scroll wheel lies in between the left and right buttons. It can be used to move the contents active window up or down so that the extra contents that do not fit on a screen can be viewed.
Selecting Icons on Desktop
To select an icon on the desktop move the mouse pointer over it and click the left mouse button. ...The icon will become highlighted indicating that it has been selected.
To select a range of icons, click on the first icon of the range to select it. Hold down the Shift key and click on the last icon in the range. All the icons in-between will also get selected.
To select multiple icons that are not adjacent to each other, hold down the Ctrl key and then click on icons one by one.
Moving Icons on Desktop
We can move an icon from one place to another on the desktop screen using the dragging act
1. Bring the mouse pointer over the required icon.
2. Press the left mouse button to grab the icon.
3. Keeping the left button pressed, move the mouse in the required direction. ...The icon will also move on the screen in the same direction.
4. Drag the icon to the desired place and drop it thereby releasing the left mouse button.
