Communication Skills
Introduction
Communication is the process of exchange of thoughts
by which we understand and try to be understood by others. If the receiver fails to
understand the message, the communication process remains incomplete.
The process of communication involves the following elements:
1. Sender: the one who shares the message
2.Medium or channel of communication: medium by which
message is transmitted, it may be oral
or written
3. Receiver: one who receives, understands the message and give an adequate response
Types of Communication:
1. Verbal Communication: it takes place with the help of words (written or spoken)

Written Communication: it is conveyed
through written symbols as in a language. This includes paper letters,
documents, e-mails, text chats, books, brochures, contracts, social media,
newspapers, etc.

Oral communication: it makes use of
spoken words either through face-to-face interaction or phone, video
conferencing, etc.
Elements of effective verbal communication:

Listening skills
·
Language competency (skill to
communicate using a language)
·
Vocabulary
·
General awareness
·
Domain knowledge
2.Non-verbal Communication: it takes place through verbal means such as facial expression, hand movements, gesture, body language, posture, etc.
Elements of effective non-verbal communication:

Body language
·
Oculesics (eye movement)
·
Proxemics (amount of physical space,
feeling comfortable)
·
Haptics (communication by touch;
e.g.- handshake, hug)
·
Paralanguage (voice segregation such
as “aah”, “um”, etc.)
·
Chronemics (use of time)
·
Olfactics (scent or smell)
3. Visual Communication: it takes place using signs, symbols, photographs, tablets, images (e.g.- posters, graphs, advertisements, etc.), drawings, videos, and animation.
Elements of effective visual communication:
